DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
An understanding of the material is crucial to the marriage of design and functionality. When designing a piece of furniture with a client I first consider the species of wood chosen for the piece. Then I take into consideration things like workable properties, coloring and grain patterns. I search for the perfect combination of these three elements in order to compliment each piece I create. I often look for wood that would be considered unusable because of imperfections like knots or a crack from a natural crevice growing inside a tree. I use these so called imperfections and highlight them by making them a focal point in the design. For example the doors on the Japanese Sake Cabinet (right side of page) were created by a natural crevice growing inside a walnut tree. Also, each cut is made with the overall design in mind, considering placement of each piece to support the design both structurally and aesthetically. The piece then exists in its natural form, at peace, and in harmony with its surroundings.
